The objective is to benefit from greater flexibility for carrying out work using products which can be connected/disconnected while energized. The hot plug system enables equipment to be connected/disconnected without shutting down the system and without the risk of damaging the rest of the installation. Continuity of service is assured even when high currents are interrupted. The hot plug system can be applied to various installation components, such as low voltage electrical panels, energy distribution solutions in computer rooms, IT equipment, etc.

Installation maintenance and scalability

The Hot Plug system is also used for managing maintenance and managing the scalability of the installation, enabling the time taken for work to be reduced considerably and therefore increasing the availability of data centers.

LOW VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION BOARD

In the context of the IEC 61439 standards, which govern low voltage distribution panels, the concepts of connection/disconnection associated with the need to upgrade the panel are essential.

 

To meet these requirements, the Legrand Group uses two indexes which provide information on the level of continuity of service of a distribution panel, which are assigned to the panel according to its characteristics and its components:

  • the Service Index (IS): French reference index, whose aim is to define the service level provided by any type of low voltage distribution panel when undergoing all types of work, during the three phases of its life (operation, maintenance, upgrading). It takes the form of a 3-number code.
  • the Mobility Index: international reference index determining the design of functional units in the board, which takes the form of a 3-letter code.

The IS, through the choice it offers, helps to boost continuity of service and the safety and security of the installation. Although this index is not mentioned in the IEC 61439 series of standards, there is certainly some correlation, in particular with regard to the “Mobility Index”.

IS 223 range

This consists of:

  • HX horizontal and vertical row distribution blocks, 125 and 400 A: these are mounted on functional uprights in XL³ 4000 enclosures. Automatic connection and disconnection on the VX³ IS column chassis.
  • HX³ support bases: these allow the automatic connection of circuit breakers with or without a residual current device on the row distribution blocks.
  • VX³ IS column chassis: tinned copper aluminium busbar. It takes VX³ IS bases for HX³ IS devices and row distribution blocks.
  • VX³ IS bases for devices: these are fixed on functional uprights. Automatic connection and disconnection on the VX³ IS column chassis. Automatic upstream connection and downstream connection via front terminals.
  • Faceplates, universal base, connection kits and other equipment.

ENERGY DISTRIBUTION SOLUTIONS IN THE COMPUTER ROOM

The MR Busbar range solution, with tap-off outlets, can be used to connect and disconnect tap-off boxes supplying a PDU while energised.

The complete unit, which can be connected to the power and to the metering BUS while the installation is energised, provides maximum flexibility as its equipment is easy to adapt to the type of power supply required (three-phase/single-phase, 16-32-63 A). When it includes metering, this solution is ideal for Colocation data centers.

IT EQUIPMENT

Essential for relaying data, the patch panels, racks and other optical fiber drawers must allow constant data transmission. To do this, hot connection/disconnection is essential so that work can be carried out with no risk of damage to existing equipment and connections.
